The only law in Clarkson’s Britain

Jeremy Clarkson is now so familiar that he has passed into “national ownership”, says Ed Cumming in The Daily Telegraph, like a sort of “truculent utility”. So much so that, after the enormous success of Clarkson’s Farm, a couple went to his house for a nosy around and walked in on his girlfriend in the bathroom. “They were perfectly pleasant,” he says, “and they simply couldn’t see that they were doing anything wrong.” Clarkson’s extraordinary familiarity is also part of the reason why, after his appearance at last year’s farmers’ march, talk turned to a possible career in politics. If he were to run in an election, one respected pollster argued, Britain could have its “Trump moment”.

It’s “extremely flattering” he says, “but I think we have now learned that newspaper columnists make very bad prime ministers”. Like Boris Johnson, “I have an idea for a column and present an argument”. The next week, “I will probably write the complete opposite”. It’s fine when you’re a columnist, “not so good if you’re a prime minister”. What does he think of the current PM? “He’s annoying. Even when he’s not being annoying, he sounds annoying.” And any man who wears “somebody else’s spectacles” and spends that much time on his hair is “a little suspect, in my view”. As a libertarian, Clarkson’s political beliefs are really very simple. “I believe in getting rid of all of the legislation,” he says. There should only be one law in the country: “Don’t be a twat.”

THE LODGE This fairytale home – being sold by the author and designer Pearl Lowe – blends “gothic revival architecture with European villa-style romance”, says The Times. The Grade II listed, honey-hued lodge in Somerset has 11 bedrooms and a suite of reception rooms lit by full-height sash windows. On the ground floor, there’s a modern kitchen, a dining room and a pantry. Six bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, occupy the first floor, along with two standalone bathrooms, while the further five bedrooms are in the attic. The house is set in 1.5 acres of landscaped gardens, including a walled vegetable garden. Frome is a 5-minute drive, with trains to London in one hour 30 minutes. £3.5m. Donald Trump loves being surrounded by hot guys, says Jemima Kelly in the FT. On his recent tour of the Gulf, the president called Syria’s new leader a “young, attractive guy”; described the UAE’s president as “magnificent”; and announced Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the emir of Qatar were “both tall, handsome guys that happen to be very smart”.
